[edit] Overview

Ladner Trunk Road is the main arterial street in Ladner, British Columbia (Canada), and is a connector route between the communities of Ladner and Tsawwassen to the cities of Surrey, Langley, and all points east. The regions the road passes through are 50% suburban (commercial and residential) and 50% rural.

Much of the area it passes through is suburban in nature: some residential, some commercial, some mixed, and in two areas, some rural. It runs mostly due east/west for its entire run.

[edit] Road details

  • Ladner Trunk Road runs from the outskirts of Ladner Village (at the corner of Arthur Drive/Elliot Street), through the commercial centre of Ladner (a part of Delta) and then into the rural farmlands of East Delta; the road terminates at the Surrey border, at the intersection with Scott Road.
  • East of Scott Road, the road continues on as 58th Ave. (Highway 10), and west of Arthur Drive, it continues on as 47A Ave.
  • Ladner Trunk Road starts from the southeast corner of Ladner Village, where it intersects with Arthur Drive, 47A Avenue, and Elliot Street. From this corner, the street is a four-lane artery that heads northeast, passes over the Chilkultan Slough, and then turns to head directly east.
  • At Central Avenue, Ladner Trunk Road enters Ladner's main shopping district, with Trenant Park Square shopping centre on the north, and Ladner Centre on the south. At this point, the road features cement traffic islands and turning bays until just east of 53rd Street.
  • East of 53rd Street, Ladner Trunk Road enters an area of mixed residential/commercial, and is again a thinner, four-lane road for about 0.8km until 57th Street.
  • At 57th Street, the road widens to include traffic islands yet again, this time complete with shrubbery and other articles symbolic of the Ladner community, such as old posts from wharves in the area, and whatnot.
  • 0.6km east of 57th Street, Ladner Trunk Road crosses Highway 17, the main highway through South Delta; from here, the traveller can head north towards Vancouver, or south to Tsawwassen, Point Roberts, Washington, and the BC Ferry Terminal linking Vancouver Island. At this intersection, the street is seven lanes at its widest, with turning bays (sometimes two) present for all turns in all directions.
  • Just east of Highway 17, the road narrows to a wider two lane road with soft shoulders (minus curbs) and gardens on either side. This runs until 64th Street.
  • At 64th Street, Ladner Trunk Road turns into a rural, but well-used two-lane road for about 10km east, until it intersects Highway 91, on the outskirts of North Delta.
  • At 80th Street, the road (now repaved, and slightly wider, though still only two lanes) runs parallel to Highway 99; 3km later, the road intersects Hwy 99 and makes an S-curve over the highway between Hornby Drive and 96th Street.
  • At 96th Street, the road turns east-northeast, continuing as a two-lane road until just east of the 112th Street interchange.
  • At 112th Street, the road turns northeast and widens to four/five lanes, intersecting with Highway 91 and an access road to a local golf course; it makes a steady climb up into North Delta, turns east, and becomes 58 Avenue at the intersection at Scott Road.

[edit] Major intersections

Since the mid 1980s, Ladner's already large community has become even more bustling, as witnessed by the amount of traffic lights Delta needed to install over the years. Any of the newer lights are highlighted in bold; any lights that used to be pedestrian lights but are now four-way are in italics.

[edit] History

  • Before Highway 91 was built in 1986, Ladner Trunk Road's alignment in East Delta was slightly different; at 112th Street the road did not make a turn Northeast, but rather stayed in its current direction, past the entrance to John Oliver Park and the golf course. It then turned northwest and then northeast, making a steady S-curve up the hill into North Delta.
  • Until 2002, all of Ladner Trunk Road used to be a part of Highway 10; now, only the tiny portion east of Highway 91 holds this designation.

[edit] Trivia

  • In many maps, the road is often also referred to as "48th Avenue" through the portion in Ladner.
  • Ladner Trunk Road/47A Ave/River Road West is the only road to cross the entire municipality of Delta - from Georgia Strait to the Surrey border.
