From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is my gamecruft page. Clearing out unencyclopaedic gamecruft from Wikipedia is difficult, because each game has its own special interest group, who will strive to keep all their lovely cruft. RuneScape, Warcraft, Command & Conquer, Halo, Resident Evil, Unreal and Final Fantasy are the worst offenders. (Note that the Final Fantasy, Pokemon, and Star Wars Wikiprojects are fairly sympathetic with efforts to help clean up cruft.) I started with C&C, and I'm almost done. If I have pointed you in the direction of this page because you have tried to use the 'but THESE articles exist!', then please feel free to add them to the appropriate section, and I'll get round to getting them AFD'd too.

The chief argument is that Wikipedia is not a strategy guide - WP:NOT. These articles almost always fail No Original Research and Verifiability, and also the guidelines at WP:CVG.

Arguments to keep are usually along the lines of 'but it's NOT a gameguide' (yes, it is), 'why don't you delete these then you stupid hipocrate!' (spelling intended, and I'll get to it), and 'this information is useful'.

To the last argument, apply Calton's Theory of Gamecruft:

Divide the world into precisely two groups: those who own and play Game X, and those who don't:
Those who own Game X: already have the game manual which contains all this information. Actual usefulness of article for this group: none.
Those who do not own Game X: have no possible use for, need of, or interest in, the information in the article. Actual usefulness of article for this group: none.
Total segment of world population that this article is actually useful for: none. The only possible group left would be those who lost their manuals and those who pirated their copies of Game X: the former group is very tiny and the latter group - whatever their size - can find assistance in their piracy elsewhere.

I don't understand why some people like their cruft so much.

Another argument is that if I want to see gamecruft game guide garbage gone, why not episodes of TV series? Or characters in shows? Answer: A list of weapons used in Halo is not the same as an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Doctor Who. It is the same as having an article on List of T-shirts worn in Buffy the Vampire Slayer or a List of Doctor Who's scarves. (Note - if these ever turn blue, I give up.)

Articles about characters in a game isn't so bad. Many games have a storyline (or storylines) and plots, just like a book or a movie. I have no issue with this. As long as it's referenced (which virtually none of them are) and not original research (which a lot of them are), cool.

It's the huge lists of every weapon/map/location/unit/item/spell that need to be expunged.

Note there may be duplication in some of these lists. I don't care enough to spend my time sifting through it and removing the duplicates. If you want to do that, be my guest. But do note as this page is in Protospace, I will freely revert anything I don't agree with. This does not mean I own this page (nobody 'owns' any page of Wikipedia), but I will be as wilful and ignorant of any viewpoints I disagree with. If you dislike that, tough. There's nothing stopping you making a copy of this to your own userspace and adding what you like.

DO NOT KEEP ADDING CHESS ARTICLES. Go make your point elsewhere, this is for video game cruft.

[edit] Edit

- These sections of articles may need removing/editing. That being said, a section isn't so bad. The existence of a whole article is bad. A brief description of the gameplay of a game, referring to various weapons used, etc, may well be of encyclopaedic interest.
