About me:

Hello! I am human, 28, and live in Chester. I have also lived in Wales and Birmingham. I used to work for the NHS, and now work for the government (boooo). I have a master's degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Birmingham, but don't ask me about anything related to the topic, as I have now forgotten it all, not having used it since graduation.[1] Thanks to work, I have full premium access to the Encyclopedia Britannica online - if you need any references from there, let me know and I'll try and help.

I used to be known as User:Proto[2] (and still am on the rare occasions I need to use IRC[3]). I made my first (logged in[4]) edit on 31 March 2005[5]. I am one of the 1557 administrators on the English Wikipedia. Feel free to ask me any questions relating to any of my admin actions - or any other actions - either via my talk page, or email me.

I am erratically active, as I have a very busy and hectic social schedule, and only really use Wikipedia when I am bored in work. I have not died in a cricket accident.[6][7]

This awesome userpage was designed by the amazing Miranda, based on my technically inept example.[8]

WiktionaryWiktionary (here)
WikibooksWikibooks (here)

Wikipedia The French Wikipedia (ici), which I use very rarely, but want to use more to better my French

Wikipedia The German Wikipedia (achtung!), which I thought I may as well set up.
Wikipedia The Simple Wikipedia (here)
  • Note I occasionally still use Proto (talk · contribs) as a seperate account for wikignoming when I don't want to be bothered.
  • Any other accounts you see with the name Neil or Proto or En.Proto may not be me (at least, not until single sign-on is implemented and I take them all[14]).

Depository of Random:

  • User:Neil/quack - An indepth and challenging essay on the duck test and what the latest ArbCom developments portend for Wikipedia over the next 12 to 18 months
  • A minor aim in life - to form a band / write a novel / create a major website or a magazine called Main Page, forcing Wikipedia to have to disambiguate its front page. Muahahaha!
  • My admirable and never-followed (even by me) admin standards: User:Neil/standards
  • 650th most awesome - official[15]
  • If you add up all the admin actions, I am the 105th most active admin (as of 10 January 2008). Clearly I'm not deleting and blocking enough. Must do better![16]
Iz srsly.
Iz srsly.
  • User:Neil/road - the worst (best?) roadcruft article ever, preserved for posterity.
  • User:Neil/N - pick away at this whenever really bored or struck down with writer's block.
  • My first RfA - I was kindly nominated by User:Marskell.
  • My second, succesful RfA. The template I used for thanks is here.
  • My no-consensus RfB. Boooooo.
  • Did you know that my old username was Lithuanian for 'minds'? Me neither.[17]
  • User:Neil/gc - the great big battle with gamecruft.
  • The best policy ever.
  • User:Neil/actors - must get back to sorting these out.
  • I haven't uploaded that many photos, and would like to do more, but the ones I have are in User:Neil/images.
  • The War on Drugs and the War on Terrorism pale into comparison with the War on 'had had'. All must die! (or better still, be rewritten to avoid such a technically correct but butt-ugly abuse of the English language). I identify the culprits here.

  • The best article ever written about Wikipedia. Essential reading for anyone wondering how this whole crazy project to create a free encyclopaedia came into being, and what it truly represents. RIP Roy Rosenzweig.
  • I don't collect my barnstars, as I am already awesome and don't need the reassurance. And I haven't had that many (sob). But you can spot them by wandering through my talk page archives.
  • My favourite piece of vandalism.
  • My second favourite piece - see the image caption.
  • My account was created on 31 March 2005, at 10:23 and 59 seconds, UTC. It was the 224,548th account to be created.[19]

  • Si hoc legerem scis nimium eruditionis habes.
  • Wikipedia: The world's largest forum for anonymous arguments. Argue with everyone in the world on any topic imaginable. You may be Stephen Hawking, a so-called "expert", but you need to reconcile your views on black holes with Bob from Idaho who thinks they are portals to Narnia and find some neutral point of view that you can both agree on.[21]

Articles created (FAs, GAs, and others): Pages I have started (or completely scrapped and rewritten). Not that I'm not proud of other pages I've started (it's over 250 now[22]), but these are special for some reason or another. No particular order.

To do:

  • Liar's Poker, expand
  • Ella (novel), by Uri Geller
  • Desolation Road
  • All the James Herriot books need a lot of work
  • The Emperor of Ocean Park
  • The Cuban Brothers
