Talk:Nehemia Gordon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gordon also appeared in an ESPN special broadcast before the 39th Super Bowl talking about his time as Reggie White's Hebrew and Bible teacher.

Is this true? --Neria 05:39, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Looks dubious to me. Couldn't find anything on the web to support it. Jayjg (talk) 15:29, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Here are some sources regarding Gordon's association with White and the ESPN special;the ESPN special did occur, I viewed it.

[edit] "Best Known"?

This sentence the best known Karaite Jew of this era is frankly vanity, it has no means of being proved, unless someone makes a poll to the average man/woman asking "who is the karaite you know the most?".

I've contact with two karaites, one is Egyptian and other is an Ukrainian hakham, none of them have heard about this gentlemen.--Leonardo Alves 15:11, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

The phrase “best known” appears 55,100 times in the English version of Wikipedia (this according to a Google search) and therefore it is hardly inappropriate, assuming it is true. Calling Gordon the “best known” Karaite Jew of this era does not imply that every Karaite Jew knows Gordon, so your Egyptian Karaite contact does not prove the matter one way or another. Ukrainian “Karaites” are not Karaite Jews and so they are irrelevant for this discussion. No other Karaite Jew has ever appeared on an ESPN special broadcast during a Super Bowl which alone gave Gordon more exposure than any other contemporaneous Karaite Jew. He also has a newsletter (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/karaite_korner_news/) with 4,677 subscribers which is significant considering there are only about 25,000 Karaite Jews in the world (some claim as many as 35,000). Perhaps “one of the best known” is more objective.Suedoss 18:02, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
