Negros Oriental State University

Negros Oriental State University (formerly Central Visayas Polytechnic College - CVPC) is a university in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental in the Philippines. It is located beside the provincial capitol building of Negros Oriental.

Central Visayas Polytechnic College was founded in 1927. By virtue of Republic Act 9299 in 2004 it was granted the status of university and renamed Negros Oriental State University.

Upon its conversion as a state university, Central Visayas Polytechnic College (CVPC) Main Campus I, CVPC Main Campus II, CVPC Bayawan-Sta Catalina Campus, CVPC Bais, CVPC Guihulngan, Genaro Goni Memorial College, Siaton State College, and Mabinay Institute were integrated together to become the collective Negros Oriental State University.

The university adopted a bi-semestral system wherein students enroll twice each year. The first semester enrollment starts as early as 2nd week of May and ends early June, when classes begin as well. Classes for the first semester normally ends on the 3rd quarter of October.

Enrollment for the second semester starts late October and ends first week of November. The semester ends on the last quarter of March although normally Honors' Day and commencement dates fall on the 3rd week of March.

The university has an average of 15,000 students per semester coming from all over the province, some as far as Mindanao, Davao, and General Santos and from the north, Manila, the Cordilleras and Cavite.

The university was fathered and led by several intellectual and prominent persons from the province. A lot of the developments that the university enjoys now is attributed to its present President, Hon. Henry A. Sojor, Ph.D.

Sojor hailed from Dauin, Negros Oriental, a small municipality known for its underwater spectacles in Apo Island. Sojor as a child was an underprivileged born to poor parents. Sojor worked his way to college and gained entrance to Silliman University, finishing his doctorate degree from the same university in the late 1980's. During the stewardship of Dr. Sojor, the university has gained international recognition and has linkages with various prominent universities in Asia, Australia and the US. The most recent linkage it had was with Kyung Hee University of South Korea.

The College of Engineering and Architecture of NORSU is well known for having produced lots of topnothers and board-passers in recent years. It is also the pioneer in Geothermal Engineering curriculum development, which it started offering in 1994.

The student government of Negros Oriental State University named Federation of Student Governments is composed of all the student governments of all NORSU campuses.
