Necessary Roughness is the debut album of female rapper Lady of Rage. After collaborating on the albums of many fellow Death Row artists, such as Dr. Dre's The Chronic and Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle, Rage released her debut on June 24, 1997. It peaked at #32 on the Billboard 200 on July 12, 1997 with its 31,888 moved copies sales index. The album only sold 300,000 copies. The reason is by this time, consumers were fixated with the sexuality rap created by Lil Kim and Foxy Brown. Despite this, the album has become a Death Row Classic over the years. After the release of this album, she soon left Death Row to join Snoop Dogg's Record label, Doggystyle Records.
