[edit] "Creature of Mist"?
The definition of Nebelung as found in this article is not listed in the standard German dictionary, the Duden, so I can't really leave the "translation" "creature of mist" in. As far as I can tell, whoever started this breed merged two words: 1.) Nibelungen (the old Germanic Saga, which includes figures after whom the first couple was named, Siegfried and Brunhilde). 2.) Nebel (the German word for Mist). If someone has a better, more accurate description of how the Name came to be, please feel free to change my current text. 85.177.82.150 (talk)
[edit] Nebelung Attributes
I have had a Nebelung for ten years and there are several observations that need mentioning about the "elegant fairytale, with its coat that reminds of dew in a summer dawn".
Fur: Nebelung fur is very fine/light and infinitely abundant (inbreed with a dandelion?). Combing only makes things worse by creating a hairball that is larger than the cat ;-). After a few years, their fur is EVERYWHERE and covers things like dust. Example, every few months, I need to take apart my mouse to remove all the fur twisted around the moving parts. Fur can make its way into CD Rom drives. If one was to seal a clean jar and come back later, it would likely have fur in it, its that bad.
Personality: Nebelungs are 99% lap cats (heat seeking) and are clingy. The only way you can have any time alone is to have a closed door between you and the cat. Laid back and mellow. slow whiny and wimpy meow.
Activity: Normal movement is best described as slinky, much like a sloth. Lighting fast when motivated.
Eating: very particular but pukes a lot when it overeats. Must regulate food amount in dish.
Intelligence: Questionable.
Other than that, my Nebelung has been one of the best cats I have owned.
