Nebim
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nebim is the second of three divisions of the Old Testament. The first being the Torah, then the historical writings, the Nebim, and the Ketubim. The Nebim includes, but is not limited to, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, Joshua, et cetera. One of the notable literary features of the Nebim is the use of inclusio. The authors of the Nebim do this to start the main idea of each work and then wrap it up at the end. The majority of these writings are during the Exile, the period of time when the Israelites were in exile, or captivity, in Babylon. Therefore, the writers of these works incorporated their ideas of what happened and should happen with the Exilic society. Essentially, the works focus on the monarchy of Ancient Israel, the judges, and the events surrounding this ancient society. Also see Nevi'im.
