As NEXAFS and XANES are the same thing, I believe they should be merged. The only difference is that people reserve NEXAFS for when they are talking about soft X-rays (up to 1000eV).
NEXAFS tends to be used by physics and surface science people more and XANES by chemists, but I've just got back from the XAFS XIII and the concensus seems to be that most people just call it XANES so I say merge them Murray.booth 12:59, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
XANES, in dealing with hard x-rays, is a different technique than NEXAFS, soft x-rays. The two techniques may seem similar but are very different in that you need to use different beam lines and synchrotron sources in order to get data. Geologist and Chemist use XANES anaylsis to experiment with a focus on heavier elements. NEXAFS is not applicable to them and their research, and thus the two pages should remain different. "NEXAFS" is "Near edge xray absorption *fine* structure" whereas "XANES" is "xray absorption near edge structure". You see, then, that the only difference betweem these two acronyms (besides the word ordering) is the appearence of the word "fine" in the former. Thus, using standard xray absorption notation, the "NEXAFS" is
up to about 40 eV above the edge.
Whereas the "XANES" is
μ(ω) up to about 40 eV above the edge.
So, indeed, NEXAFS and XANES are not the *exact* same thing, but for all intents and purposes I don't think one needs two different wikipedia articles about the two; the physics of NEXAFS is the physics of XANES. I think that the NEXAFS article can just redirect to the XANES article which can note that NEXAFS (though not formally identical to XANES) is basically a synonym for XANES. The two articles should be merged.
