NEAR fm 101.6 is the former name of NEAR 90fm (North East Access Radio). It is a BCI-licensed, communally-owned, not-for-profit community media project.
The project is operated by a democratic co-operative, open to all organisations and individuals in Dublin North-East, Ireland. Programming incorporates a positive emphasis on areas such as facilitating and supporting community development, providing access and providing a platform to a wide range of local groups.
The station also boasts the only Irish radio show ever to be fully produced by schoolchildren. The Zone, a talkshow, which was launched in 2003 was set up by transition year students (16 - 18 year olds) from the local area. The Zone is still broadcasting today, although the original members left the show in 2006 after they became what they described as "too old". They then handed the show over to another group of teenagers.
NEAR fm first went on air in August 1995.
On Tuesday 23rd January 2007, NEAR fm switched to a new frequency of 90.3fm. The station has now been renamed NEAR 90fm.
NEAR 90fm also has television department known as NEAR TV and an IT department called NEARonline. The station also runs an internet cafe in the Northside Civic Centre, where the project is based, in Coolock.
NEAR is a member of CRAOL,The Community Radio Forum of Ireland.
