The National Basketball Association's Defensive Player of the Year Award is an annual award given since the 1982-83 NBA season, to the top defensive player of the regular season. The winner is selected by a panel of 125 sportswriters, each of whom casts a vote for first, second and third place selections. Each first-place vote is worth five points; a second place vote is worth three points; and each third-place vote is worth one point. The player with the highest point total, regardless of the number of first-place votes, wins the award. Since its inception, the award has been given to 14 different players. The record for most Defensive Player of the Year Awards won by an individual player belongs to Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace, who have each won the award 4 times.
Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, and Kevin Garnett are the only players to have won both Defensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards during their careers; Jordan and Olajuwon both accomplished the feat in the same season.
