[edit] Nazia Hassan
Nazia Hassan is best known for her music. She pioneered a unique fusion of Western and Eastern rhythm and melody nearly two decades ago. Nazia’s song “baat ban jaiay” for Indian film “Qurbani” revolutionized South-Asian music and introduced Asian pop music to the subcontinent. With her brother Zoheb Hassan, Nazia sold a staggering 60 million records and became an international name at the tender age of 15.
India’s prestigious Magazine “Society” included Nazia in the list of 50 people who changed lives of Indians. That list had names like Mother Teresa, Amitabh Bachan and Indira Gandhi. Nazia was also presented with the coveted Film fare award as the best singer of the year. Pakistan honored her with esteemed “Pride of Performance” award posthumously. Nazia’s mother received the award, on Nazia’s behalf, from the President of Pakistan. However, Nazia was much more than just a pop singer. After her B.A and Law degrees she started working as political analyst in the United Nations. Working at the United Nations also provided Nazia with excellent platform from which to work in the field of social work. It was at this point that Nazia decided to continue her music only to further the cause dearest to her heart - helping the underprivileged. Nazia’s music came to be known as “music with a mission”. Her music became a mechanism by which to advance the cause of the down trodden. For example “Nasha na karo”, a plea against drug abuse and drug related crime, was the top song on the charts for more than a year in Pakistan and some other countries.
Nazia immersed herself in social work and used all her energy, and the resources at her disposal, to help the poor and needy. She worked in low income areas of Karachi, especially to help women and children.

[edit] Nehru Centre London honours Nazia
[edit] Autumn 2005
A very elegant and sober evening was celebrated in the impressive auditorium of the Nehru Centre’s beautiful building. Dr Atul Khari paid glowing tributes to Nazia and remembered the love and warmth with which India had given to Nazia. “India will keep Nazia’s legacy alive and the program at the Nehru Centre is an effort in that direction”. Dr Atul also introduced Zoheb Hassan without whom the story of Nazia and her music is incomplete.
Renowned writer, novelist, and analyst Reginald Massey was the key speaker of the occasion. He was the first person to call Nazia “girl with the golden voice”. After the question and answer session, a beautiful documentary on Nazia’s life was shown and filled many eyes with tears.
