[edit] History
The Astronomical Society of Harrisburg was formed in 1955. One of its original goals was to construct a local observatory. First, the members constructed a 12.5" Dall-Kirkham Cassegrain telescope to place in the new observatory, then they attempted to purchase a plot of land for $1000 dollars. This plot of land was then discovered to be adjacent to a to be built night club and the money was refunded.
The society learned a valuable lesson and planned the observatory out more accurately. The present property, in Lewisberry, was acquired in 1966. Since the society had not had an established history, even with 60 members, acquiring funding for the construction became an issue. Nonetheless, the Domed Observatory was completed. The society spent the next 5 years, ending in 1971, raising money to fund the observatory's initial construction. An Operations/Administration, telescope viewing pads and several telescope storage buildings were also constructed during this time.
The club continued expanding in 1979 and a 12.5" Cave Newtonian Telescope was installed in a roll-off observatory onsite. A 17" Classical Cassegrain is housed in the Domed Observatory. Recently, with the club's membership growing large, an addition to the observatory in the form of a CCD Observatory was made. The roll-off features two 14" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes.
