[edit] Suggestions

This template is a long time coming as I thought it would have eventually been incorporated into Template:Navbox generic as an option rather than a separate template; but who cares as long as it is available. A couple of thoughts:

  1. All of the headings should be retitled subbodystyle, subevenstyle, subgroup1, sublist1, etc., so it is easier to tell which group you are working with (vs. both templates calling them simply bodystyle, etc.).
  2. Should the subgroup background color default to a different color than the group background, to differentiate the two, or is the same color clear enough?
  3. If the same background color is used for group, should some other dividing aspect (such as a horizontal line) be introduced into the template?

1. Well, on another talkpage you asked for settings to set the individual group colours too. So that would create names like subgroupoddstyle and subgroupevenstyle instead of "just" groupoddstyle and groupevenstyle which already are long names. But yeah, it might be a good idea to use "sub" even though the names become a bit long.
2. I did some testing and it looks very nice if the subgroups have slightly lighter colour than the navbox groups. The colour #e6e6ff; looked very nice. I modified one template to show how I would like the default colours: NZR Passenger (Although that one uses the slightly dark grey {{navbox generic}} background. I would like slightly lighter grey background.)
3. Horizontal line? Like you did with this article? NHL Nah, I don't like that.
Check out the {{Navbox subgroup}} that I am working with, especially the test examples on its talkpage. Its not complete yet, it has a small right padding/margin problem that I am working with. But pretty much everything else you asked for on different talkpages are now included in that template.

  1. I'm sure they could be abbrev. approp. to avoid confusion, maybe "gr" for group....
  2. The first try[1] I did (I know, the widths are inconsistent) used #e3d9ff, but #e6e6ff is more subtle.
  3. The line was just a suggestion; I used it on the NHL template because above the line is a list of teams and below the line is completely non-team related links, it seemed appropriate at the time, but it doesn't really matter. — But the point is to make the eye immediately recognize which group the subgroups belong to. In looking at your example, I think that alternating the colors within a group is slightly confusing, at first glance at least; I would suggest maybe keeping the subgroup colors limited to 1 within a particular group, but they can of course be a different color in a different group. I did have another idea that fits in with the preferred subtlety: What if the spacing within the subgroup was a tad tighter than between the groups? If the alternating color option is not used, this would provide a natural break for the eye to immediately distinguish where the group breaks and which subgroup goes with which group. Just a suggestion. Thanks for taking the time to tinker with all of this. Regards.--Old Hoss 03:20, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

3. Hehe, those test examples at Template talk:Navbox subgroup are not meant to look good colourwise, just to show off / test all the different settings. Oh, I like your idea of having different spacing in some way. Perhaps one extra pixel of space below or above a group. I think I will make some examples at that talk page. --David Göthberg 04:01, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

I've added it to my watchlist, thanks.--Old Hoss 04:54, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Rename/move?

I just updated the docs and the examples in the docs to work with both {{navbox}} and {{navbox generic}}. Since {{navbox}} seems to be the new standard navbox I think this template should perhaps be renamed from {{Navbox generic subgroup}} to {{Navbox subgroup}}. Also, that is a shorter and nicer name for this template. --David Göthberg 23:04, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

I have been doing more thinking. I will not literally move this template to {{Navbox subgroup}}, instead I will create a new template there since we have several suggestions of extensions to this template, renaming of some parameters it use, default colour changes etc. Thus we can code and test the new template at {{Navbox subgroup}} and then when it works as we want it to we can convert the 17 navboxes that use this template. Thus making the transition smooth. --David Göthberg 14:08, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

So long as it does eventually get merged. It's awesome that the various navboxen have in many cases all been superceded by template:navbox: please let's not start proliferating again. By the way, many thanks for this template, comes in great for tidying kluges like Template:United States presidential election, 2008 navigation. :) Chris Cunningham 14:47, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Just wanted to report some things:
1. I didn't make this template. All honour goes to Zyxw.
2. I was intending to "merge" this one with the new {{Navbox subgroup}}. However I got busy elsewhere for some week and now CapitalR has designed a new better navbox that includes this functionality. Including the additional functionality I had added to {{Navbox subgroup}}. So both this template and {{Navbox subgroup}} is soon going to be deprecated.
3. And I myself have been working on a better navbox that also will include all this functionality. However I am unsure if CapitalR's approach or mine are the best. That is, they seem about equal to me. And they both will have the exact same functionality, just different code under the hood. And CapitalR's new navbox is already fully functional. So I am thinking I should perhaps stand down for the moment. I guess I should investigate closer if his solution is the best, if it is then we should of course use that one. And since I am a crazy programmer, I have an idea for a third way of doing it that I want to take a look at... :))

[edit] Default settings

Since the default setting for the "list" parameter was recently set to "text-align:left" [2], can the default setting for the "group" parameter be set to "text-align:right" please. I do not want to screw up the intricate template, so I am leery of doing it myself. Thanks. --Old Hoss (talk) 21:55, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
