[edit] Assets & Products
Is this section necessary? Companies can have an extremely long list of assets, and Products is covered by the Template:Infobox Company. Adraeus 21:38, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry for my late response, I had accidently unwatched this page. In regard to your question I feel that this section is quite useful. As an example of its use, let's look at Procter & Gamble and its templates. P&G produces many dozens of products, as listed at list of Procter & Gamble brands. However, not all of these are included in Template:Procter & Gamble, due to an appreciation for how many links can be fitted into a navigational template. The navigational template also fulfills a role that the P&G Infobox does not, as the Infobox currently only states "Consumer goods" in P&G's Products field, rather than naming products. And this is appropriate due to a desire for brevity in a template that is often the first thing a user sees on an article page. Including this section on corporate navigational templates allows for a discussion of the major products & assets of a company. By placing the navigational template on the Wikipedia articles of those products and assets, information and links to related articles are provided that would otherwise not likely be there.
- For example, Crest toothpaste is produced by P&G and has more than a billion dollars in sales according to the article. On its Wikipedia article the navigational template links to major products that P&G produces in addition to Crest, such as Old Spice and Pringles. These products are related to Crest as they are produced by the same company, but would not likely be linked to in the Crest article without their inclusion in the navigational template. Concerns about how much information can be included in these corporate navigational templates are very valid, but are being addressed on a template by template basis through normal Wikipedia procedures of editing and discussion. For example, see Template:Clear Channel and its recent link to List of broadcast stations owned by Clear Channel, instead of having links to each individual station.
