[edit] History
In Navarrete is telled that its name is in relation to the limit with Navarre, that in times settled down by the zone. In this line, another theory is the one that obeys to the word "Nafarrate" that in basque language is translated like "Door of Navarre", situation that occurs in the second part of 12th century; the later castellanization of the name would give rise to the present denomination. Its foundation has to do with the desire of the Castilian kings to in front of defend its territory the neighboring kingdoms.
Therefore Alfonso VIII proposed the inhabitants of the old villages of the zone that met in a defensive place. These villages were known with the name of Corcuetos and their names were: San Llorente, San Antolín, San Pedro and Nuestra Señora del Prado.
Their population settles around the castle raised in the "Cerrotedeón", founding the new villa of Navarrete. The castle was fortified and protected with a small wall, that closed the population and it defended it of the possible attacks that threatened from the north.
To the inhabitants of this new population important fueros as of 1192 were granted to them. From these fueros the origin comes to use the water of the rivers of the zone and the advantages of grass and firewoods that east town in common had with the neighbors. The cause of its markets and their fair is also the law, and thanks to these privileges the villa reached a great importance.
