Nautamlal Bhagavanji Mehta, or the Nagar Sheth of Jetpur was an Indian freedom fighter and a strong supporter of Mahatma Gandhi. He was also a prominent business man as well as pioneer of the Gandhian Movement (in Gujarat).
Mehta (Kamdar) was the first to use and bestow Mahatma ("Great Soul") for Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on January 21, 1915 at Kamri Bai School, Jetpur, India. From then on, Mohandas Gandhi was known as "Mahatma" Gandhi. It is commonly believed that Rabindranath Tagore first bestowed the name. However, there is no record of an exact date nor place to confirm this belief. [1]
