[edit] Article about Wikipedia Users

I am a freelance writer working on an article about the wide array of people who make Wikipedia their life, their passion, their pastime. Wikipedia “addicts” if you will. I’m looking for people just willing to tell their story of how they got sucked into the intellectual whirlwind that is Wikipedia; how you got started editing, how the obsession grew, and what you spend your time focusing on these days? Do you write articles from scratch? Is your main push toward one particular type of article? Do you patrol for typos and errors, or spend your time diligently fixing vandalism? Do you take part in the “social aspects” of Wikipedia; engaging in animated discussions or decorating your user page with all sorts of internet memes? Have you ever forced yourself to take a “Wikipedia break”? If so, what’s your 20/20 hindsight on the obsession? Basically I’m just trying to get an idea of what it’s like for various Wikipedia “addicts.” I am especially interested in talking with you about your role as an Adminstrator and your thoughts on Esperanza and the Wikipedia Kindness Campaign. If you are interested in participating, please email me at brianwrites@gmail.com68.39.158.205 03:10, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Hey Natalya! Thanks for the kind words on my talkpage. On an unrelated topic, I'd just like to praise you for your wisdom on the coffee lounge games MfD - you could have been unfairly biased due to your position, but you looked past that. Congratulations. All the best! riana_dzasta 04:05, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Greetings! About Esperanza COTM...

Hello, Natalya! I've created the proposal for the Esperanza Collaboration of the Month and posted it at the main Esperanza talk page because I didn't want to wait till the AC meeting. I don't even know how to get to those things anyway. As Administrator General, your opinion is greatly appreciated and desired. Thanks! DoomsDay349 04:10, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks Natalya! I'm going to dig around for proposals, but I have one more questions. Is there some way to advertise this, perhaps on the main Esperanza page with a news update? Thanks. DoomsDay349 05:18, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
(begins bowing down) WoOt! We got the head of Esperanza into our program! Alright! (Dancing). But anyway, how about being an Assistant Overseer? You seem like a great person to do so. DoomsDay349 05:24, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

OK, sounds good. I'm trying to dig up a nomination, but I can't find anything good...I'm going to search broad topics that we can get a lot of people into...perhaps something we can collaborate with another WikiProject in. A war, perhaps...I'll have to write up suggestions of finding nominations later. DoomsDay349 05:33, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

  • Well, on a slightly related note, I think that was sorely needed. Hopefully it goes well, and attracts a lot of users. That will help Esperanza's image more than any other thing we could do... Titoxd(?!?) 06:09, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sorry to bother you..

Sorry to bother you but I would like to join Esperanza. I want to learn to keep cool, use tools and so on. I am not sure whether you have to be members means joining Esperanza for getting tutions or contributing for some tutorial article. Why could I not locate "join Esperanza" link on home page of Esperanza? swadhyayee 16:42, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Thank you so much for your support!

I can't say thank you enough for the support that you have shown me over the past few days. It means the world to me, and has certainly helped me along the road to recovery! I will cherish forever the kind messages and "gifts" that were sent to me and think of them whenever times are rough.

I didn't realise that my absence would cause so much concern, and I apologise if I caused anyone undue stress. I feel that I owe you an explanation, at least! for what happened, to return in some small way the kindness you showed to me. I will post it here as soon as possible, if you would like to know the reason for my brief departure and the links on my userpage.

Thank you, Natalya, for your kind messages. I appreciate the support that you showed and I sincerely hope that if there is anything I can do to show my appreciation, you'll drop by and let me know! Thank you again!

[edit] How can we help?

I, like many of my fellow Esperanzians are feeling saddened at the MfD of Esperanza. I would really like to know how we can be of assistance. I have already voted Strong Keep and tried to raise valid points on why Esperanza shouldn't be deleted, but I feel I need to do more. Do you have any sugestions as to how regular Esperanzians like myself can help save Esperanza? Thanks, Jam01 10:07, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] MfD - Esperanza

Heh, well, it doesn't seem like refutes to my counter-points stick very well, and so I'm trying my best to 'drive them home'. Especially this - new people are repeating the same Keep arguments over and over, and the same clear reason they are bad arguments I repeat over and over. I'm just trying to reach everyone. :) JoeSmack Talk 16:13, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] High School

Hi Natalya, I just wondered if I could ask you a question. The thing is, every so often an IP will come onto my talk and ask me about High school (this all started when I was reverting vandalism on the high school page). I've stated that I don't know, but I've just got a message from another IP about school (I'm not even sure what they're asking me - how many years is grade school? How many years do you have to be before you can go to college?). I get the feeling that they're just winding me up, but if I ignore them, would that be a violation of WP:AGF? I'm not in any form of education at the moment, either, so I don't know any teachers or anything. Sorry to bother you, I just thought, "I'll ask Natalya. She's an admin, and head of Esperanza.". Thanks. Oh, and good news about the MfD, too, eh? Yeah. Well Drawn Charlie 22:45, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, Natalya, have done! :) Well Drawn Charlie 23:25, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] RE:My comments

Hey Natalya. I find it being harder and harder to be civil, especially to this user. Perhaps I shouldn't have voiced my opinions outright there; but it's so hard sometimes. You have to admit; it's so hard to assume good faith of Ella. I lost my patience once, politely apologized twice, the first apology she replied to in a huff, and very rudely, and the second, more sincere if you ask me, she wouldn't bother to respond to at all. You can hardly call her comments civil; they borderline on personal attacks! I will try to remain civil with her, do my best, but I'll die before I apologize to her again. This debate is really stressing me, and I've got RL issues... don't worry I'm not leaving Wikipedia or Esperanza, but it's just tough. And I can't even take a Wikibreak because I keep wondering about what's happening. Just...stress. I keep worrying I've lost a lot of people's respect in this debate, and... well, yours was one I really was proud of having. Hope I can gain it back. DoomsDay349 23:30, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Well, my comment was also the truth.

And I'd also like to say that I admire that more because I am not what I should be. I am uncivil, inconsiderate of others, POVish, likely to have conflicts of interest, disinclined to deal with stupidty, hostile to trolls and uneducated fuckups, and incapable of holding my tongue. Additionally, my combative nature, loyalty to friends, and sarcastic, acerbic nature get me into even more trouble. I fear that there are people who will not be satisified with restructuring Esperanza but seek it's wholesale annihalation, which is going too far, and that people like you are the good qualities in EA. --ElaragirlTalk|Count 16:58, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Interview for Wikipedia Weekly?

Hi!

You may or may not be aware of the Wikipedia Weekly podcast, which is now approaching its eighth weekly episode, on which I'm a regular presenter. This episode, we'd like to cover the Esperanza dispute now that the dust has had time to settle, and would very much like for you to come on the show to talk to us about it. We'll also be inviting a few other representatives of Esperanza, and User:Robth to provide an opposing view.

All that would be required are a microphone, a reasonably fast internet connection, and a free copy of Skype. We'll likely be recording at around 1500 UTC on Saturday, although feel free to suggest an alternative time if this wouldn't suit you. You can also join us in #wikipediaweekly on FreeNode prior to the podcast. Thanks for your time, and I hope you can join us on the weekend. :) Daveydweeb (chat/review!) 00:48, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Admin coaching program

Hi Natalya. As Esperanza admin general, I wanted to tell you that I've made some changes to the admin coaching program. The volunteers and requests have been moved to separate pages, and I hope this will facilitate easier maintenance of this project. I also moved all the old requests to an archive because I could not tell who already has a coach and who doesn't. I hope that people who still want a coach will re-list themselves. HighwayCello used to coordinate the program but he's not around right now. So.. this is an fyi. Maybe you want to put it in the newsletter. I haven't involved myself in the overhaul debates, but I hope this program continues. I took up its coordination because I did not want it to die. Thanks, Fang Aili talk 23:18, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Update--the request list is just about current, and I am currently matching students with coaches. The eventual goal is to have the program more-or-less run itself, but I think we need to have all the old requests cleared before that can happen.
I hope you are having a pleasant wikibreak. --Fang Aili talk 19:26, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Esperanza mfd

I recently intervened in a discussion on misc. for deletion about removing the Esperanza pages from the project namespace.

Had there been sufficient support, Esperanza would have been forced to either shut down or take their pages off-wiki, thus effectively forking from wikipedia; a situation which Esperanza was intended to prevent, IIRC.

Fortunately there was no clear consensus to do that, but disturbingly there was no clear consensus in support of Esperanza either.

I think that the basic concept of assisting people wrt acculturation to wikipedia is a great idea. I just think that -over time- Esperanza has drifted away from that goal.

Currently the debate on Esperanza reforms is dominated by inexperienced users. It's great to see enthusiastic people participate, but they could use some input from some wise old people, I think, so it might be a good idea to recruit some, or if you have them, now would be a good time to set them to work. ;-)

Could we discuss the current situation at some point in time? I've previously talked with JoanneB last spring when the outline of the current situation was already apparent. I talked with Celestianpower just now, and his reccomendation was to contact you.
