Talk:National Library of Australia/Usage of NLA Images

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As per Talk:John_Howard#Howard's_picture, User:Brendan.lloyd contacted the National Library of Australia via their website, with the following enquiry: "Can you please clarify the copyright status of NLA images (eg. photographs of Australian political figures) with respect to their inclusion and/or linkage on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org)?" Their response (enquiry 29751):

Thank you for your enquiry. The National Library has attached a number of photos to Wikipedia entries and for the most part the photos are either out of copyright or the National Library is the copyright owner. If you double click on the image it will bring up a larger copy of the image plus information relating to copyright and further use of the image. For example see the image of Robert Menzies and the copyright information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Robert_Menzies_1930s.jpg

[edit] Discussion

Hi, I am a National Library of Australia Pictures collection staff member (exploring and reading Wikipedia in my own time) and noticed this talk page. Both images are still in copyright. Just because one doesn't have a copyright statement doesn't mean the image is out of copyright, it just means the images have been catalogued differently. If anyone wants help with using NLA images you are welcome to contact the Picture Branch and we can tell you if an image is public domain or if we can give permission for its use or even who to contact for permission.

Hi Nicholas, thankyou very much for the clarification. I would suggest that it could do with fixing as i'm sure i'm not the only one to assume that if one says it may be in copyright, and the other one doesn't, that the one that doesn't has no copyright. Timeshift (talk) 10:24, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
