Natu (alternate spelling Natoo) is a family name found among Chitpavan brahmans(brahmins.) There are several clans of the extended Natu family. One such clan calls Achare their ancestral home-town.
There are two major divisions of the Natu clan. Saradar (Knight/squire) Natu's are descendants of Balajipant Natu, a squire in the court of Peshwa Bajirao II who has the distinction of unfurling the Union Jack atop Shaniwar Wada upon the fall of Bajirao II in 1818 after Third Anglo-Maratha battle.
The other division disavows any relations with this and calls themselves Wakiil (Lawyer) Natu's. This stems from the fact that this section of the family has produced multiple lawyers every generation that made a name for themselves, Kashinathpant Natu being the most prominent.
