Nato Vachnadze was born in Warsaw to a father from an old noble Georgian family, and to a Polish mother. She adopted her last name from her first marriage to Merab Vachnadze. Her second marriage was with director Nikoloz Shengelaia — the first film family of former USSR before Andjaparidze - Chiaureli, Orlova - Aleksandrov and Makarova - Gerasimov. Later, the marriage of her youngest son Giorgi Shengelaya to Sofiko Chiaureli made the family the most powerful in the film industry of the Soviet Union. Her second son Eldar Shengelaya is also a prominent film director. The older son Tengiz Vachnadze is an architect[citation needed].
