[edit] History

NYWE was origionaly formed as the elite group of performers from the National Childrens' Wind Orchestra (NCWO), which still exists today, and worked under the name The National Childrens' Wind Ensemble but changed to its present name after allowing older children to join the ensemble, now allowing people up to and including 19 years old to be members of the band.

The boys and girls in the ensemble used to rehurse as part of the National Childrens' Wind Orchestra (NCWO) for the main part, and only occasionally rehurse as the smaller ensemble group. This changed when the group became a separate entity in 1998[1], although many of the players in the band today, have been members of the NCWO previous to their membership to NYWE, where their conductor Phillip Scott continued to develop the band. He still hold the position of Conductor at present day.[1]

Ever since the band was formed, it has been a one player to each part organisation, making it totally unique amoung British Youth bands which play on a national scale, using about 40 players. [2]

In 2007, the band had 43 players.

The Band has frequented such musical conferences and events as the Sweedish WASBE (World Association of Symphonic Wind Band and Ensembles) Conference in 2003, and in 2007. they played at WASBE again, when it was held in Killarney, Ireland. At this conference the band played: the Sheng Sheng Bu Si Clarinet Concerto by Philip Grange, The Spiralling Night by Joseph Phibbs, Diaghilev Dances by Kenneth Hesketh and Omaggio by Michael Ball. [3][4] Several recordings have been taken of live performanes of the band as well as recordings taken in the studio.

Throughout the history of the band they have performed world premiers of pieces such as the Sheng Sheng Bu Si Clarinet Concerto by Philip Grange, and The Spiralling Night by Joseph Phibbs, both of which were performed since 2006. [1]

[edit] Recordings

The Band started making recordings early after its creation, mainly for sale at an event where the the band was playing. For example a CD was recorded of the band playing live at WASBE, and was mainly sold to people signing up on the day.[5][5]
