[edit] History

The history of National Textile University dates back to 1954, when the Government of Punjab joined hands with the leading textile industrialists to form an institute of Textile Technology in Faisalabad. Funds for the institute were donated by Kohinoor Industries, Colony Textile Mills, Dawood Foundation and Lyallpur Cotton Mills; while 63 acres of state land was provided by the Government of Punjab. The Government of UK provided the bulk of equipment and machinery, along with the services of experts. Nominees of the donating industrial groups became members of the Board of trustees, headed by Minister of Industries.

The foundation stone of this institute was laid by Field Marshall Muhammad Ayub Khan on the 12th of October 1959. It was named as Lyallpur textile institute. The core idea was to establish a textile institute of world fame. A Board of Trustees, with the Minister of Industries as chairman and nominees of the donor companies as members, was constituted to manage the affairs of the institute. Later in 1965, the institute was granted affiliation by the University Of Engineering & Technology, Lahore. The first batch of graduate engineers was passed out in 1966. In 1973 the administrative control of the Institute was transferred to Federal Government and it was renamed as “National College of Textile Engineering”. In 1983 a President’s order was passed to run the college affairs more smoothly through a Board of Governors that consisted of Federal Minister of industries as Chairman, seven members from Federal/Provincial Governments and three members from All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA). In 1992, the college received a comprehensive assistance worth 650 million yen from the Japanese Government, through JICA program, in the form of latest machinery and equipment for all the departments of the institution. But this was before the transfer of this institute’s administration completely into the hands of APTMA. Thereafter began the decadence and downfall of this mother institute of Textile. In September 1993, the management of the college was transferred to All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) and government reconstituted the Board of Governors taking seven members out of eleven, from APTMA. Ever since the APTMA has taken charge, the graph of the university began to fall not only in reputation but also in development and on the grounds of academic achievements.

The university was temporarily accredited by the Pakistan Engineering Council for the year 2001 and 2002. Since then the re-accreditation process is underway as proclaimed by the university administration. The Federal Cabinet on November 15th 2002 upgraded the college as National Textile University. The president of Pakistan is the Chancellor of the University but still no convincing measures taken to recognize our institute as a professional engineering institute. The only solution to all problems is to transfer of this institutes management and charge to the Federal Government specifically under the regulation of Ministry of Education Pakistan and recognition with Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC).

In September 1993, the management of the college was transferred to All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA). APTMA has taken many steps for raising the overall standard of education and improvement of facilities in the college. The Federal Cabinet on November 15th 2002 has upgraded the college as National Textile University. The famous martyr Tariq cheema shaheed who unsuccessflly attempted an assiassanation attack on the cartonist who made a humilating picture of HAZRAT MUHAMMAD (SAWEW)was an exstudent of NTU Faisalabad.
