The National Solidarity Party (Chinese: 国民团结党) is a centrist party in Singapore. Formed in 1987 by a group of middle-class businessmen and women, it has contested the elections since 1988 and has not yet won a seat. Its previous leader was Yip Yew Weng, before being currently led by its President Sebastian Teo and Secretary General Law Sin Ling. Its previous Secretary General Steve Chia was a member of the Parliament of Singapore as a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament. He was then the most successful opposition candidate who did not win a seat in the Singapore general election, 2001.

The NSP is a political party founded in July 1987. It was a founding member of the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA), led by Chiam See Tong, MP for Potong Pasir. The NSP was represented in Parliament from 2002 to 2006 by its ex-Secretary General Steve Chia, as the Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) when he garnered the most percentage of votes among the Opposition losers at the 2001 General Elections in Choa Chu Kang.

The NSP focuses around introducing 'competition' into politics, with the intrinsic perspective that due to the total dominance of the People's Action Party that there is not a high level of accountability and not enough checks and balances. The party has been noted by observers as being as a continuation of the highly meritocratic culture that has become popular in Singapore during the last century into politics. As noted above, the party is a centrist party in terms of economic and social policy, arguing that 'greater' involvement from more sectors of Singaporean society in politics would further 'democratise' the government's decision-making paradigm.

[edit] Rebirth

After another dismal showing at the general election of 2006 which saw Steve Chia lost his Non-Constituency Member of Parliament seat, a fresh leadership led by Sebastian Teo was given the mandate to drive the Party forward and to lift the NSP out of its near political desolation.

In 2007, the party voted to leave the Singapore Democratic Alliance[1] with a view to "explore new possibilities through wider latitude to manoeuvre, re-engineer, and rebuild the NSP".

Under the leadership of Sebastian Teo, the NSP was given a new lease of life, symbolically acquiring the new collective colour of orange for their activity jersey as a sign of vitality and rebirth. The Party's newsletter underwent a transformation, and adopted the new name North Star.

In late 2007, the Party formulated a set of political objectives and mission statements to further realign its Party vision.

Political Objectives

• To build a multi-Party democracy by winning seats in the next General Election.

• To organise and maintain an active ground presence to understand the people’s need and concerns.

• To provide a credible platform for the people to express their views and concerns so as to influence government policies.

Mission Statements

• The NSP exists to uphold democracy and provide constructive ideas to benefit the society.

• We shall positively promote the establishment of a multi-Party political system.

• The NSP envisions to be a credible and caring ruling Party.
