Ruta nacional 40

Ruta nacional 40 is a road in western Argentina, stretching from Cabo Vírgenes (Santa Cruz, south) to La Quiaca (Jujuy, north).

The longest road of Argentina, goes from south to north, more than 5000 km (3125 miles), starting at sea level, going across 20 national parks, 18 major rivers, connecting 27 Andes passes, and goes up to 5000 meters over sea level in Abra del Acay in Salta.

The legendary road goes across Santa Cruz, Chubut, Río Negro, Neuquen, Mendoza, San Juan, La Rioja, Catamarca, Tucuman, Salta and Jujuy.

Although it is notorious for being largely unpaved, the government has pledged to put it under tarmac by 2007, a task they are mostly on track to complete on schedule.

There are a number of internationally important sites along this route, such as Cueva de las Manos, which contains cave art dating back some 13,000 years, and Los Glaciares National Park, the second largest National Parks of Argentina.
