National Pollutant Release Inventory

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) is Canada's legislated, publicly-accessible inventory of pollutants released (to air, water and land), disposed of and sent for recycling by industrial and other facilities across the country. The NPRI was established in 1992. Similar Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTRs) include the US Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), Mexican Registro de Emisiones y Transferencia de Contaminantes (RETC), European Pollutant Emission Register (EPER), and Australian National pollutant inventory (NPI).

Facilities which meet reporting requirements are required to report to the NPRI under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999). Over 300 substances are listed on the NPRI, and over 9,000 facilities annually report information on their pollutant releases and transfers to Environment Canada.

NPRI data is available through an on-line Query search, downloadable Microsoft Access (mdb) format datasets, and downloadable Google Earth map layers.
