The Preservation of Monuments Board (PMB), a statutory board within the Government of Singapore under the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA), has so far gazetted 58 buildings and structures in Singapore as the National Monuments of Singapore. These buildings are deemed to be of special historic, traditional, archaeological, architectural or artistic value.
[edit] Protection of National Monuments
Under section 9 of the Preservation of Monuments Act,[1] buildings gazetted as National Monuments cannot be "demolished, removed, altered or renovated or have any addition made" without the prior written permission of the PMB, "except in case of urgent and immediate necessity for the safety of persons or property." The penalty for breaking this law is a fine of up to SGD$1,000.
