National Library of Maldives

The National Library of the Republic of the Maldives (Gaumee Kuthubuhaanaa) was established in 1945. It serves as the Public and National Library of the country, maintaining modern literature.
The library plays a major role in rendering its service to the general public, by providing a diverse collection of all published reading materials and documents within the country. This encourages reading habit and research work among the community, and are especially useful to students, teachers, researchers, Government personnels and children.
The National Library is financed by the government and functions under the Ministry of Information Arts and Culture.

In 1945, the National Library of the Republic of Maldives was founded by the then head of Department of Education, Mohamed Amin Didi. It was known as the "State Library" then, but was later renamed as "Majeedi Library". In 1982, the library was once again renamed as the "National Library" by President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and to this day it functions under this name.
