National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology (often abbreviated NKFUST)
(traditional Chinese: 國立高雄第一科技大學; Hanyu Pinyin: Guólì Gaōxióng Kējì Dàxué; Tongyong Pinyin: Gúolì Gaosyóng Kējì Dàsyúe) is a national coeducational university located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
In Chinese, it is colloquially known as Gaokeda (高科大, Pinyin Gaōkēdà) or Gaoxiongkeda
(高雄科大, Pinyin Gaōxióngkēdà). Its campus is set upon 750,000 square meters in Kaohsiung's Nan-Zih district.
NKFUST, formerly as National Institute of Technology at Kaohsiung (often abbreviated NITK), was established on July 10, 1995 by the Ministry of Education (Republic of China), to educate students to develop Taiwan into an Asia-Pacific Regional Operations Center (APROC).
The Ministry of Education approved the upgrade of its status to university on July 1, 1998, it was re-named as National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology, as the first higher education institution of technical and vocational education system in Kaohsiung. Professor I-chang Jou, is the current president of the NKFUST.
At present, the university consists of the colleges of Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Management, Finance and Banking and Foreign Languages with total 15 departments and 27 graduate institutes. Around 235 teachers and 6,981 students are currently engaged in academic activities.
NKFUST aims now to set up various graduate programs and to continue to distinguish itself as a vital research and training center, ensuring that its graduates are well prepared for Taiwan is competitive job market.

National Institute of Technology at Kaohsiung (often abbreviated NITK), was established on July 10, 1995 by the Ministry of Education (Republic of China). Dr. Chia-hung Ku was the first president of the NITK.
In July 1998, the NITK received the approval from the Ministry of Education to rename National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology (often abbreviated NKFUST), as the first higher education institution of technical and vocational education system in the Kaohsiung area.
Led by the president Dr. I-chang Jou from August 2004, the NKFUST team with its excellent academic and hard-working staff and energetic students has been working together to make the university a bigger success.

NKFUST has a 75-hectare area located across Kaohsiung City and Kaohsiung County in the southern of Taiwan. The university is crossed by the number one freeway and divided into the East (Kaohsiung County) and West (Kaohsiung City) campuses.
East campus is mainly for teaching activities, and West campus for student residence and recreation. The campuses cover an area of 750,000 square meters, with 191,533 square meters of building area.
The library has a collection of 284,921 items including books, audiovisual material and journals. There are also 7,768 kinds of subscribing paper & electronic journals and 200 databases.

The objectives of the Language Center provides a modernized, multifunctional, and individualized environment for Language learning.
- Chinese Language Program
Language Center offers Chinese Language Program (non-credit) for students wishing to improve their Chinese. The Chinese course design emphasizes on pronunciation, communication skills for daily situations handling, and simple writing.
- Foreign Language Program
Language Center provides courses for many foreign languages. Such as Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Korean, and so on.
[edit] Sports, Clubs, and Student Traditions
The university fosters students' ability to both think independently, and to lead and work in teams. It encourages students to set up various clubs according to their own interests. At present there are 65 clubs at the university, which fall into seven categories: academic learning; music and drama; friendship; service; entertainment; sports; and others.
The university promotes various sports activities in hope of fostering students’ life-long interest in sports, and to promote students' mental and physical fitness. Every year, the university holds such campus-wide sports activities as cheering competition, jogging on campus, and anniversary sport competitions.
