The entrance to the campus

The NITT was started as a co-operative venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1964 with a view to catering to the needs of man-power in technology for the country. The college has been conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development. Because of this rich experience, this institution was granted Deemed University Status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and Govt. of India in the year 2003 and renamed as National Institute of Technology. NITT was registered under Societies Registration Act XXVII of 1975.

The Chairman, Mr. R. Seshasayee of Ashok Leyland Ltd. was elected to office in 2005 and the Director of NITT is Prof. M. Chidambaram from 2005. Presently the institute is undergoing an accelerated growth phase through the World Bank funded Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme.

The vision of NITT is to contribute to India and the World through excellence in scientific and technical education; to serve as a valuable resource for industry and society; and increase the human values and sustain the heritage of India. The values include Academic integrity and Accountability, Equality, Social Relevance, Intellectual Excellence and Creativity, and Entrepreneurship. Its mission is:

  • To promote academic growth by offering state-of-the-art undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes.

[edit] Student life

The spirit of being in NITT is the freedom one gets, to explore life, without compulsions, without any crushing force from academic pressures; generally people pursue one or more skills, join clubs and groups to work for their own self on something disconnected from academics.

The best part about NIT Trichy (specially engineering courses) is that the intake of students is from all over India. Students have to secure top ranks in the very competitive All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEE) to obtain admissions. Each state has a fixed number of seats for each branch. The end result is that for any branch, there are students of different states/culture/language. As most of the students stay in hostel, it gives them a chance to get to know each other better. Everyone learns to respect the different lifestyles of each individual.

Extracurricular activities include participation in NCC, NSS, literary clubs, trekking clubs, photographic clubs and students' chapters of IEEE, SPICMACAY, Entrepreneurship Cell, CRY. A modern gymnasium and other sports facilities are also available in the campus.

Festivals Prominent events at NITT include Festember, a 3 day cultural extravaganza for colleges in the region. Technical symposia are conducted by the departments, during the months of January to March, every year.

  • Festember, an annual cultural and literary festival, held in the month of September.
  • Pragyan, an annual technical festival (started in 2005).
  • NITTFEST, an annual inter-departmental cultural and literary festival.
