The Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar popularly known as NIT-Jalandhar or NITJ , is a leading premier autonomous university in northern India. The Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar is one of the youngest among the twenty National Institutes of Technology of India. It was founded in 1987, as a joint venture between the Government of Punjab and the Government of India, originally under the name Punjab Regional Engineering College, Jalandhar (PREC).
The institution was established in the year 1987 as Regional Engineering College and on October 17, 2002, was given the status of National Institute of Technology (Deemed University) by the Government of India under the control of Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi, India, in a bid to provide increased autonomy in decision-making.
NITJ is a leading premier centre of excellence in Engineering and Technology to produce technical manpower for India. It was ranked 4th among all NITs[1]. The institute offers BTech program in nine disciplines of Engineering and Technology along with research programs leading to MTech and PhD. The institute acquires a national character having 50% student intake from Punjab and the rest from other states/union territories of the country.

[edit] Students
The students of National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar are drawn from all parts of the country. As per the admission policy, 50% of the students, who join, are from the state of Punjab whereas the other 50% are from the other states of India. At present the hostels have a capacity to accommodate 1050 male and 252 female students. The residential accommodation in hostels comprises cubicles and dormitories (3 seater).
[edit] Fests on Campus
TechNITi: A Techno-management fest, it is conducted during the odd semester during the last week of September. Participation involves colleges from all over India and SAARC countries. The events involve all the departments.
Utkansh: A cultural fest, it is conducted during the even semester and participation is again drawn from the entire student community in India and one of the highlights on the Institutes's calendar.

The various societies that are active within the institute include the: 1. The Music and Dramatics Society(MADS) which is responsible for the annual cultural fest called Utkansh which is conducted during the even semester.
2. The Literary and debating Society (LADS) which organises events throughout the semester including events like business quiz, general quiz, debates, story writing competitions and other events of similar nature.
3. National Social Service or N.S.S. is a society which strives to inculcate good social habits among the students. Its activities include cleaning of the campus, spreading awareness about the environment, visits to nearby slums to improve empathy towards the deprived classes and other activities.
4. The Photography Society organises events during the fests.

The admissions to the bachelor degree program run by the institute are by an all India level technical test, known as the AIEEE. The admissions to the Master Degree Programs are by the GATE exam conducted by the IITs and IISc.
