[edit] History

NITIE was established in 1963 by the Government of India with the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) through the International Labour Organization. Steve Dembicki, who was a Chief advisor at ILO, and Dr. Vikram Sarabhai were instrumental in founding the institute.[citation needed] Its first on-site Director was Vinayak S. Vernekar who had previously worked at TISCO in Jamshedpur.

The institute in its initial days was spread across the country with knowledge centres situated at Hyderabad, Chennai and Delhi. Gradually, during the late 80s, all of these nodal centres were shut down and a single centre was formed, which is currently located at Mumbai.

[edit] Motto

NITIE's motto is Udyog Pragati(Hindi) which translates as "Progress in Industry". The vision of the institute is to build up indigenous capabilities and competence in the technology management interface.

[edit] Management programmes

NITIE offers various two-year post-graduate programmes in management:

  • PGDIE (Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering): Commencing in 1971, this is the flagship program of the institute.
  • PGDIM (Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management) (equivalent to MBA)
  • PGDISEM (Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Safety and Environmental Management)
  • PGDITM (Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology Management)
  • Fellowship (PhD)

The admissions for the above programmes are through exams like GATE (Graduate Aptitute Test for Engineers) and CAT (Common Admission Test). The institute only admits engineering graduates with a first-class in their graduation year.

[edit] Research

NITIE is engaged in applied research and offers consultancy in various facets of management. In addition it conducts sponsored research and organizes seminars and conferences in varied areas of interest. NITIE's publications appear in its two quarterlies: NITIE News and Udyog Pragati.
