National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology (NIFFT) is a fully residential public co-educational institute located in the mineral-rich belt of India in the town of Ranchi.

It was established in 1966 by the Government of India in collaboration with UNDP - UNESCO to provide qualified engineers and well trained specialists for running Foundry and Forge industries to meet the great shortage of specialists to run these industries efficiently. The initial objectives of the Institute has further broadened to meet the present need of the Industries, with the introduction of departments of Manufacturing engineering and Materials and Metallurgical Engineering.

During the last four decades NIFFT has earned reputation as a leading institute for teaching, training, research & development, consultancy and documentation and information retrieval services in Manufacturing Engineering and Industrial Metallurgy.

[edit] History

NIFFT is registered as a Society under the Indian Societies Registration Act of 1860. The management of the Institute is vested with a Board of Governors with a chairman at its apex and members representing the Government of India (Ministry of HRD & Industry), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), private and public enterprises, technical and R&D Institutions, et cetra. The Institute received technical and financial assistance during its formative period in the form of UNESCO fellowships, experts services, laboratory equipment et cetra.

The initial objectives of the Institute has further broadened to meet the present need of the Industries, with the introduction of a number of new academic programmes.

[edit] Departments, centers, and facilities

NIFFT has the following departments:

  • Foundry Technology
  • Forge Technology
  • Manufacturing Engineering
  • Materials and Metallurgical Engineering
  • Humanities and Social science

The Institute is equipped with limited facilities for computational works, which include Horizon-3, 32 Bit, Mini Computer system having a large number of terminals for use during their studies and project works. A large number of personal computers are also available apart from full-fledged graphics workstations, NEXUS-3000 for design and drafting works. The various software available are C, C++, Visual C++,C++,Developer,Turbo PASCAL, FORTRAN 77,AUTOCAD2000, ORACLE 8i,NISA packages, QUEST, MICROSTATION MODULAR.Procast,Pro-E,ANSYS etc.

The Institute houses various laboratories such as Sand Laboratory, Metallography Laboratory, Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) Laboratory, Non-Destructive and Mechanical Testing Laboratories, Spectroscopy Laboratory, Environmental Monitoring and Pollution Control Laboratory, Metrology Laboratory, Forging Laboratory, Computer Center, etc.. The workshops have comprehensive facilities for Heat Treatment, Casting, Forging, Pattern and Die Manufacture. All the shops and laboratories are adequately equipped with modern and sophisticated instruments for efficient teaching and training. The Department of Foundry Technology has sand laboratory with the facilities for testing of sands and binders, and foundry workshop for melting, moulding and casting of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys. The Department of Forge Technology has Forge workshop, Forge Laboratories and Heat Treating facilities which includes Fluidized Bed Furnace, Muffle Furnace and Glow bar Furnace. The Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering has laboratories for metallography, chemical analysis, spectro-photometry, mechanical testing, non-destructive testing, pollution control and monitoring, x-ray diffractometry, induction heating, direct reading emission spectroscopy & image analysis. The Department of Manufacturing Engineering has Pattern and Machine shops, Metrology , Flexible Manufacturing System ,Electronics, CAD ,Welding and Electrical Laboratories.

NIFFT houses one of the best libraries in its technical field. This vast reservoir of knowledge is a source of constant value addition to the students and faculty members. The four-storeyed library's rich collection includes over 31000 books, 3560 bound volumes and 215 current periodicals in Manufacturing, Metallurgy, Materials Science and allied areas. In addition, it has CD-ROMs on various aspects of engineering, up-to-date standards both Indian and foreign, technical films, tapes, slides, microfilms, microfiches etc. OPAC facility to the user through the software 'LIBSYS" is also available. The Institute has entered into reciprocal understanding with the International Library and Cultural Center, Ranchi.

[edit] Academic programmes

NIFFT offers a wide variety of courses of study with a primary focus on Manufacturing Engineering & Metallurgical Engineering. The programmes and courses offered at NIFFT have the flexibility to evolve and change, and to respond to new challenges as NIFFT is evolving into a full fledged engineering institute from the earlier focus on Foundry & Forge Technologies. The program has produced famous alumni like Gaurav Singh who is now a well known guitarist in Santa Clara, California.

The Institute conducts educational programmes leading to Advanced Diploma (ADC), Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.), Master of Technology (M.Tech.)in the following areas:

Degree Specialization
Master of Technology (M.Tech.) Foundry-Forge Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering and Environmental Science & Engineering
Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) Manufacturing Engineering and Metallurgical & Materials Engineering.
Advanced Diploma Course(ADC) Duration: 18 months Foundry Technology and Forge Technology.

Presently, the undergraduate students at NIFFT are selected through the [[All India Engineering Entrance Examination]]. At a given time, the campus is home to more than 500 people, comprising of students, faculty and non academic staff.

[edit] Life at NIFFT

NIFFT has a very active student life, including the annual college festival Jinks, the only of its kind in the region. NIFFT also holds an annual sports competition. NIFFT has Institute football and cricket teams. NIFFT also holds an annual techfest named as Pranav.

[edit] Recruiters

The placement of the students of NIFFT reaffirmed the confidence the industry has in these programmes. The fields in which the students were placed, underlined the unique positioning of NIFFT's academic courses in the plethora of technical courses. The nature of jobs offered to NIFFT students varies widely. These offers are mainly in areas of Heavy Engineering, Automobiles, Iron & Steel industries, Foundry and Forge Plants, R&D, Machine Tools, IT, Quality Assurance, Manufacturing firms etc.
