[edit] Overview
National Institute of Design, NID as it is popularly known in India, is internationally acclaimed as one of the foremost multidisciplinary institutions in the field of design education. It has four decades of distinguished service in design education, design training and design practice behind it. Today it is known for its wide variety of programmes offered in both under graduate and post graduate levels, the exacting standards of education and the high levels of professional competence of the graduates from this institution. Education at NID aims to create design professionals of excellence to help meet India’s design needs, and to train design trainers for other design and design-related institutions. Design at NID is very closely linked to the context of use and the user, the design method taught here is unique to this institution and has been perfected and refined over years of practice.
Since it's inception as an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Industry, now known as Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India in 1961, NID has received numerous significant national and international awards. NID has been recognised as a Science and Industrial Research Organisation by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India.
NID had been set up looking at the industrial design education being imparted in Bauhaus and Ulm in Germany
It is known for its pursuit of design excellence to make “Designed in India, Made for the World” a reality.
Last year,on 19 July 2004, National Institute of Design commenced the I.T.Integrated Design Programmes (New Media Design, Information and Digital Design and Software & User Interface Design) at Gandhinagar, the new campus.
The Gandhinagar campus currently hosts these three disciplines. The Gandhinagar campus is going to be the next PG campus of NID some years down the line. The construction for the new institute will commence next year. There are plans to include Automobile Design and Jewellery Design too from next year.
[edit] Background
During the early years of post independence India, manifold changes were taking place in economic and social scenario and in production processes with the introduction of new technologies even in the remotest corners of the Indian sub-continent. There were at that time, great thinkers who realized that the process of development demanded a closer look at the future policies and resources that would later on determine the pattern and pace of growth envisioned for India of the future. The Industrial Policy Resolution of 1953 outlined these concerns and indicated broad guidelines. It was as result of these activities that the Government of India invited the renowned design team of Charles and Ray Eames to recommend a programme of design to serve as an aid to the newly established small industries in India. On the basis of their ground breaking and insightful document, 'The India Report', the Government of India set up the National Institute of Design in 1961 as an autonomous national institution for research, service and training in Industrial Design and Visual Communication.
[edit] Courses offered
The institute offers two kinds of courses 1. GDPD(Graduate Diploma Programme in Design) 2. PGDPD
1. GDPD(Graduate Diploma Programme in Design) Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) commences with a two-semester Foundation Programme. This programme is geared to assist in developing attitudes and sensorial skills, necessary for further specialisation in specific areas of design. The purpose is to create an awareness of the environment and to arouse the students' creative faculties. The objective of the Foundation Programme is to introduce the students to the Fundamentals of design, to inculcate them to design as a problem solving process and to develop a highly evolved aesthetic sensitivity, and 'design' attitude.
In the foundation programme, basic design courses are augmented by related studies of science and liberal arts, to help and develop an understanding of the Indian milieu and the relevance of design.
The foundation programme is geared to inculcate the development of values, attitudes and sensorial skills; necessary for any design specialisation. The programme provides the necessary direction, stimuli, facilities and experience to foster creativity and thereby help each individual discover their own identity, ability and potential.
The foundation programme is the basis on which the remaining design curriculum is built. It also makes students appreciate the multidisciplinary nature of design.
This 4-year intensive professional UG programme is offered in the following three Faculty streams.
Industrial Design (Product Design, Furniture and Interior Design, Ceramic & Glass Design)
Communication Design (Graphic Design, Animation Film Design, Film & Video Communication, Exhibition Design)
Textile and Apparel Design (Textile Design)
Admission is open to students who have passed or who will appear for qualifying examinations under the Higher Secondary (10+2).
