The National Institute of Design (राष्ट्रीय डिज़ाइन संस्थान) better known as NID is the foremost design Institute in India. Currently an extension campus of the parent institute in ahmedabad, NID Gandhinagar is situated in the city of Gandhinagar, in Gujarat. The three IT integrated design disciplines of New Media Design(NMD), Software and user interface design(SUID), and information and digital design(IDD) are being taught in this newly developed campus. The future plans include shifting all the Post graduate disciplines to this campus and starting new courses for jewellery design and automobile design.

[edit] New Media Design
The New Media Design programme is offered as a two year post graduate diploma programme to those who have a bachelors degree in specific disciplines and have basic competence with multimedia software and convergent technologies.
The programme aims at developing dynamic New Media producers who understand and are conversant with the process of creating and distributing media content electronically, be it a CD-ROM, website, kiosk etc. They will have the knowledge of all aspects of production and business, including legal issues such as intellectual property rights. They will be capable of leading teams in a multimedia environment.
As New Media becomes the medium for every possible interaction from buying and selling to training, information and entertainment, job definitions could be many. Graduates from this programme can look forward to rewarding careers as multimedia producers, web designers, game designers etc. They may find jobs creating computer-based training programmes, stand-alone databases, kiosks or CD-ROMS for education, entertainment or interactive satellite television.
Courses include Digital Image Making, Visual Thinking, Systems Design, Interface Design, Cognitive Psychology and Cultural Theory, Research Methods, Web Design, e-commerce etc. Students actively participate in seminars that are highly intensive sessions, combining elements of research, critical enquiry and analysis, to emerge with strong propositions that will shape the praxis of design for New Media. The seminars also work as tools to get the pulse of the rapidly changing multimedia industry.
[edit] Software and User Interface Design
Human Computer Interaction (HCI) is a broad area of concern in the software engineering discipline. The maturing area of user interface design within the HCI arena touches upon and incorporates concepts from human factors engineering, industrial design, product usability and assessment, cognitive and social psychology and education technology.
User Interface Design refers to the methods and devices that are used to accommodate interaction between machines/computers and the human beings who use them. User interfaces can take on many forms, but always accomplish two fundamental tasks: communicating information from the machine/computer to the user, and communicating information from the user to the machine/computer.
Interface Design can be the difference between product acceptance and rejection in the marketplace. If end-users feel it is not easy to learn, not easy to use, or too cumbersome, an otherwise excellent product could fail. Good User Interface Design can make a product easy to understand and use, which results in greater user acceptance.
The program is designed to be a technical and practical forum for industry practitioners and software designers.
At the end of this program, students will be able to:
Apply User Centered Design process for the development of user interfaces for software applications and electronic appliances.
Develop and evaluate research methods appropriate for use in Indian context for building cross cultural interfaces.
Develop and evaluate research methods to explore new modalities of interaction to create new forms of interactive experience and expression.
[edit] Information and Digital Design
The two-year programme in Information and Digital Design at NID is designed to help students develop both a breadth and depth of knowledge about fundamentals of Information and Digital Design (IDD). This programme is aimed at providing the students with adequate knowledge and training which will enable them to design effective and accessible products for a wide range of audience and media¡ªfrom print to digital, from education to Artificial Intelligence. Students will have document management skills to understand issues in the storage, access, retrieval and navigation of information plus the analytical skills, knowledge of methodology, usability techniques to measure product effectiveness.
Information Design is the process of conveying salient information to the end-user in as effective and efficient a way as possible, given the task at hand and the limitations of the medium being used. Information design is concerned with making complex information easier to understand and to use. It is a rapidly growing discipline that draws on graphic design, applied linguistics, psychology, ergonomics, computing sciences, cognitive ergonomics, information science, communication science and other fields. This multidisciplinary programme has great relevance for knowledge /information based industry. Information Design is focused on users and is committed to using usability and other research and testing methods to find out whether its products actually achieve their objectives. The field of Information Design applies traditional and evolving design principles to the process of translating complex, unorganized, or unstructured data into valuable, meaningful information. Intelligence is a key ingredient factor in the process of Information Design. User centered information design is the goal of the Information and Digital Design discipline.
The emerging computational technologies and software developments are playing an important role in shaping up the field of Information and Digital Design. This discipline is a highly interdisciplinary branch of knowledge. Information and Digital design is realised in multitude of forms, spheres, applications, and technological inventions i.e. Artificial Intelligence (AI), Expert Systems, Business Support Systems, Visual Data Bases, Digital Actors and Digital Agents, Interaction and Experience Design, Interactive Multimedia, Computer Based Training, e-commerce, e-banking, Data Mining, Information Graphics, Geo-Informatics, Bio-informatics, Intelligent System Design, Scientific Visualization, Data Base Management, Instruction Design, Statistical graphics, Content Design, Knowledge Management, Information Systems Design and Decision Sciences etc.
Life here is not a "student" as similar to other institute comparatively but making a real sense to the words of self realisation . As there is nothing good or bad , but it is the way we see things. making own life meaningful and others life fruitful[neutrality disputed].
[edit] Work at NID - Gandhinagar

Work at NID-Gandhinagar, is best described as working under constraints. Awareness of the limited resources of time and money bring forth the best creative response from the budding designers. Assignments or Project work is done individually as well as in groups, a decent balance between the two allow the trainee designers to fully realise their potential. Individual projects help the individual search for his particular direction and style, and are also essential to assess the progress of each individual. Group work brings together batch-mates of sometimes dissimilar background and disciplines, hence is prone to plenty of disagreements, but the lighter moments too abound. The projects are facilitated by faculties. Almost every project requires the students to work closely with the end user, hence a lot of techniques of gathering first and second hand user data is practiced here
