National Federation of Cypriots

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 'National Federation of Cypriots in the United Kingdom' is a London based umbrella organisation and the national representative body of Cypriot community associations across the United Kingdom. As such, it leads and co-ordinates the activities of approximately 300,000 Britons of Cypriot origin who make up the largest Cypriot community outside of the island itself.

The Federation was founded shortly after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. It spearheads the British Cypriot community's efforts to promote the cause of a reunited Cyprus, free from Turkish occupation troops, for the benefit of all Cypriots.

Peter Droussiotis was elected President of the Federation in June 2007 succeeding Haris Sophoclides who retired after 10 years in the post. Droussiotis is the first second generation Cypriot elected to that position and the fourth President of the Federation since its establishment. Peter also serves as President of Episteme - The Association of British Cypriot Professionals and has previously been a leading Labour Councillor in the London Borough of Haringey. A barrister by background, Peter founded [PGD Strategy http://www.pgdstrategy.com], a specialist corporate finance and strategy consulting firm in 2000, after a career which included senior roles with Credit Suisse, Minet Group (now part of Aon) and Price Waterhouse (now PWC).

As Described in The House of Commons Report

The Federation of Greek Cypriots is an organisation representing almost all Greek Cypriot community associations in the UK, many of which are themselves "special purpose federations". Whilst a Cypriot descent is common amongst these members, they are, with very few exceptions, British citizens with an inherent right to a voice in policy-making at a national level.
