National Engineering College was started by K.Ramasamy, in 1984, with a vision of providing quality education to the rural people of southern Tamil Nadu. Initially, the college taught only Mechanical Engineering, and the youngest departments are the Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, and the department of Information Technology which were started in 1994.

The college is located in the southern most part of India, far away from the Metros. Chennai is the closest metro, around 600km away, while Madurai and Trivandrum are the other major cities that are close by.
