The National Anxiety Center was founded in 1990 by American business and science writer and Public relations consultant Alan Caruba as "a clearinghouse" whose "original purpose was to debunk ... claims made by environmental and consumer organizations ... engaged in deliberately false, mass media-driven scare campaigns" about matters such as global warming and ozone depletion.[1][2][3] The National Anxiety Center continues to highlight environmental and consumer issues and concerns that Caruba regards as either overblown or overlooked by the media. According to Caruba, who solicits donations on behalf of the center on its website, it is "not intended to be a profit center."[1] From that presentation, it appears to be a not-for-profit organization based in South Orange, New Jersey.[1]

The Chicken Little Award is a dubious achievement award given by the center to people and organizations that Caruba considers to be engaged in "deliberately false, mass media-driven scare campaigns" regarding environmental matters.[1]
