[edit] USAGE

This template is for ARTICLES which incorporate NASA text. For NASA images, use {{PD-USGov-NASA}}. --Fastfission 00:22, 3 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wording

This is a terrible notice. "All NASA information is in the public domain?" I'm not sure what "NASA information" means. Also, AFAIK, the NASA logo is in the public domain, however its use is restricted by other, non-copyright laws. anthony (see warning)

I'm putting both this and {{NASA-image}} on TfD. --Ardonik.talk() 19:54, Sep 11, 2004 (UTC)
Scratch that--too many articles link to this template. For images, we should still get rid of {{NASA-image}}, though.
The category Category:NASA images shouldn't be in this template if it's used by non-image articles. Rather than go through 200+ articles trying to fix this manually, for the time being I think we should just remove this template from all non-image articles. Bryan 06:41, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I am now in the process of visiting Category:NASA images and removing {{NASA}} from every non-image article I find there. The process will probably take days (assuming I remain interested long enough to complete it....) --Ardonik.talk()* 20:09, Oct 24, 2004 (UTC)
  • There is obviously some misunderstanding on how to use this template. Use Template:PD-USGov-NASA for NASA images. This template is for any information including articles. —Mike 04:51, Oct 28, 2004 (UTC)

(moved from Wikipedia:Template messages)

  • Template:NASA duplicates Template:PD-USGov-NASA. One should be substituted for the other, preferrably by a robot, and the unused templated deleted. --MarkSweep 04:12, 20 Dec 2004 (UTC)
    • I have NetBot running to make this switch on the images. Will update when complete. -- Netoholic @ 06:03, 2004 Dec 20 (UTC)
    • Completed switch of the template on image pages. The template is still in use in articles, so more discussion on that point may be needed, or voted on at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion. -- Netoholic @ 06:45, 2004 Dec 20 (UTC)

[edit] Public domain or used with permission?

This template was recently brought to my attention. The NASA guidelines do not use the term "public domain". Instead they say that they have "no objection to the ... use of NASA still picture photography ... subject to the following conditions ...". These conditions include "for educational or informational purposes" and "NASA should be acknowledged as the source". Regarding the first condition, Wikipedia:Copyright FAQ#Educational licenses says that Jimbo has prohibited the use of images with permission for educational use only. That make use of this template (and NASA images) a little tricky. Regarding the second, the template itself certainly acknowledges NASA as the source. Is that enough, or does this condition oblige us to mention NASA as a source in every caption? If so then, at a minimum, the template should so advise users. Further down, the guidelines say things like "NASA material is not protected by copyright", which does sound very much like public domain, but I have to say that the attempt above to impose conditions on use acts against that interpretation. Bovlb 00:09:19, 2005-09-03 (UTC)

All that really matters is the line "NASA material is not protected by copyright unless noted." The rest is terms of usage for their entire website, which is grounds for Wikpedia users to be banned from nasa.gov, but not grounds for a claim of copyright infringement, as I understand it. I'll try to update this template with something more specific. --Fastfission 00:17, 3 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Talkpagiified

I have made this template into a template for talk pages. Please take a note of this. ViperSnake151 19:46, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Forgive me if I'm not aware of one of the millions of obscure WP guidelines, but why? References go in the article, not the talk page. Who is going to look there? - BillCJ (talk) 21:47, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
