NASCAR 98 is a racing simulator video game published and developed by EA Sports and released on October 31, 1997 for the Sega Saturn, and on November 17, 1997 for the PlayStation. This was the first of the EA Sports NASCAR series, and is regarded as one of the best. Since no other racing game has made any note worthy improvements other than in graphics, this game is known as the "Only Racing Game You Ever Need to Buy!" The game's features include:
- 24 Winston Cup drivers
- 10 official NASCAR Winston Cup tracks and 6 fantasy road courses (Including the Suzuka Road Course used during the 1996-1998 NASCAR Exhibition races in Japan)
- Commentary by Bob Jenkins
- Single race
- Championship season
- Interactive pit stop menu
- Custom car setups
- 24 car field
- "Southern rock" style soundtrack, including Molly Hatchet's Flirtin' with Disaster
- Included "paintball mode" cheat where cars could be spun out with multi-colored trajectory
- Ability to change Kenny Wallace's Square D car into a #98 EA Sports Car, and to change Bobby Labonte's Interstate Batteries car into a #81 Pinnacle Trading Cards car.
- A "50th Anniversary Edition" was later released, with Richard Petty as a playable driver and Darlington Raceway as a playable track.
[edit] Critical Reviews
Critics were generally pleased with NASCAR 98, praising the game's graphics (which were regarded as exceptional for its day). The game's cars' "fast and loose" handling was also well received. However, the game's soundtrack was regarded as "not as good as future games' sountracks".
[edit] Trivia
- This game is rated K-A, despite mild lyrics in Flirtin With Disaster (Flirtin' with disaster, y'all/Damn sure know what I mean)
