The Narita Airport Terminal 2 Shuttle System (成田空港第2ターミナルシャトルシステム Narita Kūkō Dai-ni Tāminaru Shatoru Shisutemu?) is an automated people mover used in Narita International Airport, Narita, Japan. This system started its operation in December 6, 1992.
Narita International Airport, the international airport of the Greater Tokyo Area, opened the current Terminal 2 in 1992, as well as the shuttle system. The shuttle links the main building of the terminal and its satellite, 279 m away. The whole ride takes a minute, and is free of charge.
The system is made by Nippon Otis Elevator, a company specialized in elevators and escalators. As a matter of fact, it is technically (and legally) not a railway, but a horizontal elevator; cars are attached to a cable that moves them, like a funicular. These cars do not have wheels; instead, they float on 0.2 mm of pressured air. This is the first system of its kind to be used in an airport, as well as the first in Japan.
