Naprej zastava slave

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Naprej zastava slave", (English: Forward, Flag of Glory) is a poem in Slovenian language, which was used as the Slovenian national anthem[citation needed] between 1918 and 1989.[citation needed]

It was written by Simon Jenko and put into music by Davorin Jenko on 16th May 1860.

When Slovenia became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (Yugoslavia), the poem was included in the Kingdom's national anthem, next to Bože pravde and Lijepa naša domovino. In 1945, the royal Yugoslav anthem was replaced by Hej Slovani. Naprej zastava slave was still used as the anthem[citation needed] of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia till 1989[citation needed], when it was replaced by Zdravljica. Naprej zastava slave remains the official anthem of the Slovene military.[citation needed]

Davorin Jenko, the author of the song's melody, also composed the Serb anthem Bože pravde (God of Justice).

Naprej zastava Slave

Naprej zastava Slave,
na boj junaška kri
za blagor očetnjave
naj puška govori!

Z orožjem in desnico,
nesimo vragu grom,
zapisat v kri pravico,
ki terja jo naš dom.

Naprej zastava Slave,
na boj junaška kri,
za blagor očetnjave
naj puška govori!

Draga mati je prosila,
roke okol vrata vila,
je plakala moja mila,
tu ostani ljubi moj!

Zbogom mati, ljuba zdrava,
mati mi je očetnjava,
ljuba moja čast in slava,
hajdmo, hajdmo, zanjo v boj!

Naprej zastava Slave,
na boj junaška kri,
za blagor očetnjave
naj puška govori!

Naprej! Naprej!

[edit] In English

Forward, Flag of Glory

Forward!, flag of glory,
To battle, heroic blood!
For our fatherland's sake
Let the rifles speak.

With weapons in our right hand
Let us crush the devil's wrath
And write in blood the justice
Demanded by our land.

Forward!, flag of glory,
To battle, heroic blood!
For our fatherland's sake
Let the rifles speak.

My dear mother asked,
she wrought her hands around her neck,
my sweet mother weeped,
remain here beloved child!

Goodbye dear mother,
the fatherland is my mother,
it is my honour and glory,
Forward! Forward! to battle.

Forward!, flag of glory,
To battle, heroic blood!
For our fatherland's sake
Let the rifles speak.

Forward! Forward!
