[edit] Summary
Convention: Ice hockey is an international sport and has players playing from all over the world. This proposed guideline is to ensure uniformity, consistency, and recognisability for article titles and spellings.
[edit] Guideline in a nutshell
Hockey article titles should use the most common spelling in English as described by reputable reference books and media outlets. In most cases this means the omission of diacritics and other characters not commonly found in English.
|
[edit] Scope
This guideline is about standard letters (a-z/A-Z) with diacritics, existing in languages of which the native script is based on the Latin alphabet:
- Vowels with diacritics: é; à; ö; â; ę; ... (as used in languages like French, German, and many others).
- Consonants with diacritics: ł; ś; ń; š; č; ç; ñ; ... (as used in languages like Polish, Czech, Spanish, etc...)
As a Wikipedia:Naming conventions guideline, this guideline is about article names, not about the use of alternate versions with or without diacritics in the body of the Wikipedia articles.
This guideline does not apply to redirect pages, which can (and should) use diacritics to ensure that all popular variations of a name's spelling, still redirect to the proper article.
[edit] Disambiguation
All articles should attempt to use the most common form in English, but due to shared names, this is not always possible.
[edit] Players
In the event that a player shares the same name as another notable person, use one of the following options:
- Use (ice hockey) following the players name, such as John Adams (ice hockey).
- Use middle, or nicknames, for the article title, such as Greg "Gus" Adams, Greg C. Adams, and Tiger Williams.
[edit] Teams
In the event that a team article shares the same name as another team from a different league or sport, use one of the following options:
- Use the initials from the league following the team name. For example, Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Pirates (NHL) and Colorado Rockies and Colorado Rockies (NHL)
- Note: The most notable team from the most notable league should get preference over article title naming.
- Use the sport following the article title. For example St. Louis Blues and St. Louis Blues (hockey)
[edit] Rationale
Wikipedia is clear that the most common form in English be used (Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English) for article titles. For most hockey players, this does include diacritics and other foreign characters. There have been many discussions on this topic. Some of the more notable are found here:
