Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Football in Australia)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Due to the large variety of codes of football played in Australia, conflicts sometimes arise when naming articles. The following is a proposed guideline for use of the word "football" in articles.
[edit] Terms for football codes
The four main football codes should be referred to as:
Other less popular codes, which should also be disambiguated using the below rules:
- Gridiron/American football (which one?)
- International rules football
[edit] Article names
- In an article that only relates to one of these codes, the above name should be used in the title (if the word "football" is in the title) and the first paragraph. The word "football" can be used throughout the rest of the article.
- In an article that relates to more than one of these, the terms above should be used throughout the article.
- Articles and categories which do not include the terms "Australian rules", "soccer" or "rugby" in their title, for example, Football in Australia should be disambiguation pages or categories.
- Exception: Article titles which contain names of official organisations, such as Australian Football League and Football Federation Australia
[edit] Special case: Australian national football team
-
- This name is a redirect to Australia national football (soccer) team, with a disambiguation header pointing to Australian national football team (disambiguation).
- This is because the other codes either:
- (a) are token representative sides which do not play in international competition - All-Australian Team
- (b) do not refer to themselves or major international competitions as "football" teams - Australia national rugby union team (see category) and Australian national rugby league team (see category)
- (c) are minor codes and do not warrant primary disambiguation as per regular Wikipedia policy - Australia national gridiron team/Australia national American football team (which one?) and Australia international rules football team
