Namsosbanen or Namsos Line is a 51 km long railway line between Grong and Namsos in Nord-Trøndelag, Norway.[1] The line branches off from Nordlandsbanen at Grong Station.
[edit] History
Based on a decision in Storting on June 2, 1913 the construction of the railway started in 1922 and it was opened on November 1, 1933. There had been a discussion about building the extension of Hell-Sunnanbanen via Namsos instead of Snåsa towards Nordland, but instead Namsosbanen had been built as a branch line of what would become Nordlandsbanen. The passenger traffic on the line was closed from January 1, 1978 and a new terminal station was built in Namsos in 1981, shortening the line with 1.01 km. Freight services followed and were terminated in 2002, though it was considered reopened for lumber transport in 2005. [2]
