Namakkal district, headquartered at Namakkal is one of the 31 administrative districts of Tamil Nadu state in South India. Namakkal District was bifurcated from Salem District with Head Quarters as Namakkal with an Order issued by the Government on 25-07-1996. Namakkal District started functioning as a separate district with effect from 01-01-1997. The district has 4 taluks (subdivisions) - Tiruchengode, Namakkal, Rasipuram and Paramathi-Velur (in descending order of population). It has two Revenue Divisions, - Namakkal and Tiruchengode.


It had a population of 1,493,462 as of 2001. It is 36.51% urbanised as per Census 2001. [1]

The district has a literacy of 67.66%, one of the best in the state.

The district is known as a transportation hub, connecting the west of Tamil Nadu with the capital city Chennai. It is best known for its transport companies, including trucking services, accounting for a bulk of goods traffic from the southern region. The district is also well known for its poultry and dairy industries, accounting for a bulk of supply of poultry products to neighbouring industries. In fact, Namakkal produces about 65% of the egg output of Tamil nadu.[2]

It has also made its mark in recent years, as a major centre for high school education.

Namakkal is called as Education city due to the more number of schools and colleges. A big Anchaneya temple is available at the main city.
