Naka-Meguro train disaster

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Naka-Meguro train disaster of March 8, 2000, 5 people were killed and 33 were injured when the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line train on Naka-Meguro Station sideswiped a derailed train. Most city and suburban railways worldwide build their tracks very close together, and a 300 mm derailment may be enough to foul the other lines. City railway track centres might be 4 metres (13' 1½"), or less. This applies especially in cities when land is expensive.

In country area, wider track centres are affordable. A picture in IRJ of the Teheran to Mashhad line show centres of about 20m.
