[edit] City Meaning

Nairobi means City in the sun

Well, no, although it is (was?) a slogan for the city. An alternative slogan is "city in the slum", since more than a third of the population live in a slum (according to BBC News, at least). — Matt Crypto 23:38, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Nairobi means "Place of Cool Waters" in Masaai because it was a swamp. The label given to Nairobi was "Green City in the Sun".

[edit] City History

Was the city actually cited because it was above the 'malaria' altituded? The way this information is presented makes me think someone added it to give Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" some kudos. Does anyone actually know whether this fact is true? 210.54.0.101 22:54, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] What is the correct derivation of Nairobi?

The original article said it comes from Ewaso Nyirobi, on Oct 20 2004, anon 209.211.56.200, changed that to Enkarenairobi. I've changed it back because I'm dubious of this. Can anyone verify which is correct? Paul August 02:41, August 25, 2005 (UTC)

Encyclopedia Britannica Online says:
...taking its name from a water hole known to the Masai people as Enkare Nairobi ("Cold Water").
There's some websites that use "Ewaso Nyirobi", and some that use "Enkare Nairobi". I wonder where the variant comes from? I'd be inclined to go with the EB version, at least for now. — — Matt Crypto 08:58, 25 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Changes by mkimemia

Hi, I have added bulk to the Nairobi section, changing the two paragraphs into several subsections.

I have also added an info-box.

[edit] Urban national parks: compare and contrast

> "Nairobi ... does have several tourist attractions. The most famous is the Nairobi National Park. 'It is the only national park to border a capital city, or city of this size.'"

> Tijuca Forest: "The Tijuca Forest (Floresta da Tijuca in Portuguese) is a mountainous hand-planted rainforest in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is the world's largest urban forest, covering some '32 km²'. ... 'In 1961, Tijuca Forest was declared a National Park'."

> Population of Nairobi: 2,500,000
> Population of Rio de Janeiro: 6,023,699

> "Nairobi National Park is '117 km²' but is only a few km from the centre of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya.

The park is unique in being a protected game reserve within the boundaries of a major city."

There are few other capital cities which border a capital city but all of them seem to claim to be the only one ;-)

check this out:

http://www.staff.amu.edu.pl/~zbzw/ph/pnp/kamp.htm:

"Kampinoski National Park is located north-west of Warsaw, being the only national park which borders on a capital with over a million inhabitants. It is also one of the largest national parks of the European lowland, which stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Bug River. The Park was founded on January 19, 1959 in order to protect the remnants of the Kampinos Forest in the old valley of the Vistula River. The current Park area is 36,533 ha, of which 15 % is under strict protection. "

[edit] UN organizations

What UN organizations - if any - are hosted in Nairobi? I came across the Vienna International Centre article and saw Nairobi listed as a host for some UN organizations. KyuuA4 19:27, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

UNEP and UN-HABITAT have headquarters in Nairobi (mentioned in this article). Also the UN African headquarters is based in Nairobi. Julius Sahara 20:34, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Take a look at UN Office at Nairobi's (UNON) web site for an up-to-date list. (http://www.unon.org/)

[edit] Out of Date photos

Please do not post out-of-date (ie. old) photos in this article.

An example is this photo, which is over 10 years old:

Don't forget that it's sometimes difficult to get up-to-date photographs of some things. An old photograph is better than no photograph at all. — Matt Crypto 08:14, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pollution

Is pollution a problem in this large developing city? -- Beland 04:15, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Pollution isn't a large problem in Nairobi, as it is in other fast-developing cities. Nairobi is not situated in a valley or bowl, and the city usually has steady winds that blow away pollution, so smog is not a problem. Mkimemia 20:56, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Elevation

Is Nairobi situated at 1660 metres, as stated in the Geography section, or at 1860 metres, as stated in the Climate section? Jbgilm 05:43, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

At Nairobi Railway Station, the plaque reads: Nairobi - 5453ft (above sea level) Mkimemia 19:04, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Making Nairobi an A-Class Article

What can be done improve Nairobi from a B-Class to an A-Class article? Mkimemia 19:04, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

This article has improved lately, largely due to your efforts. There is still some work ahead, at least more references are needed. Julius Sahara 19:32, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Comments made by user Alan.ca to make Nairobi a better article:
  1. Remove broken/red wikilinks - Done Sunday 10th June 2007
  2. Remove px sizing and left placement tags from images - Done Sunday 10th June 2007
  3. Implement WP:CITET templates to properly format references.
  4. Include more references for stated facts.
  5. Consider finding a better skyline picture for the infobox.

[edit] Urbanization?

"Crime had risen in Nairobi as a result of urbanization" - this should be substantiated in some way, or the person/s or groups who assert this point should be quoted, as this is a highly simplified and generalised statement which cannot be quantified in such simple terms.

[edit] IPA transcription

Is the IPA transcription correct? Isn't the correct IPA just "Nairobi" or have I been pronouncing the name of the city wrong my whole life? -67.85.180.72 22:19, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

No because, for example, the letter 'i' dosent exist in recieved pronounciation. Mkimemia 07:22, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Media or Links?

as one founder of a specific TV station, called "SLUM-TV", which is actually an artistic project, where Mathare Slum dwellers, members of Shootback/MYSA produce and screen their own newsreels, i want to ask if a link would fit, within the Media Section, or as external link. Content produced by SLUM-TV you can watch online too, as content after public screenings is uploaded to http://www.slum-tv.info , to serve and generate an archive of oral history. hope you can help me out, with some practical tips, as i'm quite new to wikipedia. thx Alex slumtv 13:36, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Where is Wilson Airport?

"Wilson Airport is a small, busy airport to the west of Nairobi."

The Wilson Airport page says it is "five kilometres south of Nairobi." Which is correct? 66.234.220.195 (talk) 17:19, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

It's southwest. Editorofthewiki (talk) 14:14, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
