Nagarcoil Forward Defence Line

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nagarcoil Forward Defence Line is the Army Defence Line separating Sri Lankan Army and LTTE millitia in Northeastern Kilinochchi - Southestern Jaffna border. The unique topography of the area ([1]) makes it almost impossible for either of the two sides to push for a military victory in this area. The FDL comprises a very narrow isthumus connecting Jaffna peninsula to rest of Sri Lanka. It is only a few hundred meters wide and on the both sides heavily fortified and mined as well as abundant in booby traps. Compared to Muhamalai FDL, the Nagarcoil FDL is much narrower and so it is extremely difficult to over-ran enemy bunker lines. The Manalkadu desert (Under SLA control) is located North of the FDL, while the small hamlet of Kudrappu (Now uninhabitted and under LTTE control) is located to the South. All together in both Nagarcoil FDL and Muhamalai FDL, the LTTE troop strength is around 1,800. The SLA strength is not known but is estimated to be several thousands. For the past several years, along with the Muhamalai FDL, Nagarcoil FDL is the most active front in the Sri Lankan Civil War. It seems unlikely that the stalemate will end anytime soon. A 40 meter wide no-mans land separate the first line of defences of both militias.
