Nagaon is a city and a municipal board in Nagaon district in the Indian state of Assam.

Nagaon was earlier known as 'Khagarijaan'. At the time of the British domination it was spelt as 'Nowgong'. Later on the spelling was changed to 'Nagaon' to have the appropriate pronunciation in Assamese.

Nagaon (Borduwa) is the birth place of Sri Sri Sankardeva, the founder of Vaishnavism. It is also home to the Kaziranga National Park, which is famous for its one-horned rhino. It is known as the "Rice Bowl of Assam" because of the abundant rice cultivation that takes place here.

The river Kolong, a tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra, flows through Nagaon and in the process divides the town into two distinct regions - Nagaon and Haibargaon. The railway station in Nagaon is located in Haiborgaon.

Nagaon has the oldest school in Assam, The Nagaon Mission High School, established by the christian missionary Miles Bronson way back in 1846. Besides this the other very good christian missionary schools in Nagaon are the Christ Jyoti School, St Ignatius Loyola School and the Little Flower School.

The stadium in Nagaon is named after the late Nurul Amin. It hosts the prestigious Independence Day Cup Football tournament every year in Aug-Sep in which most of the teams of national repute participate.

Nagaon is the junction point of two Indian National Highways - NH 36 and NH 37.

The main shopping areas in Nagaon are Daccapatty, Marwaripatty and Stadium market. But new market places are developing in the Haibargaon area. The main market places in nagaon are Bara Bazar, Natun Bazar and Haibargaon Bazar. Many renowned politicians given birth in this town, like Deba Kanta Borooah, former President, All India Congress Committee, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, youngest Chief Minister, etc.

As of 2001 India census[1], Nagaon had a population of 107,471. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Nagaon has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 73%. In Nagaon, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
